Penny Candy is a great read. It speaks to the banking industry and what a mess it created in 2008 to the financial world. Also giving a view from within of how difficult it is for a female to be successful in an industry that is predominantly male. It appears the bankers in this story had no moral compass nor did they consider the impact of their dealings to the financial world. Along with the challenges presented by her position as a female attorney in the banking industry she also met all of her personal challenges with a great deal of strength and determination. -Cathy Morice
Penny Candy could not have come along at a better time. As we all continue to reel from the effects of the financial meltdown of 2008, Marjory Babb helps us to make sense of it as she takes us behind the scenes in the world of high finance. Her deft pen exposes and explains the wheelings and dealings of white collar criminals who are able to operate with impunity as they gratify their greed while leaving a trail of economic chaos in their wakes.
The protagonist is an honest and idealistic female attorney who is swept into the maelstrom of big banking's shady schemes. We join her in her struggle to maintain integrity as she is chewed up and spit out by the system that she had to claw her way into, overcoming the gender bias that continues to exist in American culture and big business.
Along the way we learn of her personal tribulations and triumphs, her difficult first marriage, her struggle to help her addicted son, a near death experience, and how she finally finds the love of her life in a truly remarkable man.
PENNY CANDY was a thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile reading experience. I will be looking for more from this promising new author. -Alex
